Moving Tips


6-8 weeks prior to moving
  • Determine furniture layout of new home
  • Create inventory of all items being moved
  • Arrange school transfers, get doctor/dental referrals in new area, arrange transfer of medical records
  • Change of address card to be filled ut at post office

4-6 weeks prior to move
  • Obtain packing supplies, boxes, tape, and markers
  • Clean out all closets and drawers
  • Use up or dispose of food, cleaning supplies, and any hazardous materials
  • Get rid of unused/unwanted items (garage sale, donate, etc.)
  • Arrange carpet/drape cleaning
  • Arrange full house cleaning
  • Arrange moving accomodations for pets and plants
  • Arrange for cancellation of utilities (gas, water, phone, etc.) from old residance, and obtain new utilities for new residance, or arrange for utility transfer
  • Contact homeowners insurance with details of move and transfer of insurance
  • Begin packing
  • Make travel arrangements

Within 30 days of move
  • Change information on drivers license, auto registration, voter registraion, and other forms of identification
  • Change address information on bills and other area's that require your address

2-3 weeks prior ro move
  • Set aside critical documents that will remain with you during move, and shortly after move
  • Notify family, friends, and others of new address
  • Notify employer

1-5 days prior to move
  • Defrost freezer
  • Empty ice maker and ice trays in case of power outage
  • Clean refrigerator, stove, and other appliances being left in old home
  • Disconnect and drain appliances that will be moved
  • Transfer banks if needed, close out safe deposit box if applicable
  • Confirm all arrangements
  • Have payment, snacks, and water ready for movers
  • Gather outdoor furnishings
  • Return cable/satelite TV boxes/Internet modem if applicable
  • Organize keys
  • Clean house
  • Finsish packing
  • Prepair food for moving day

Moving day
  • Disassemble bedding
  • Double check all cabinets, closets, appliances, and storage areas. make sure all is empty
  • Give movers tour and instructions

The best advice we can give you as a mover is to declutter your current home and determine what items you really need to take with you. This sorting process, especially done in basement, attic, and garage, will reduce the final cost incurred in your move.
